The efficacy of transnasal palatal transillumination for the diagnosis of submucous cleft palate

Abstract Background Submucous cleft palate (SMCP) is a congenital abnormality with various clinical and anatomical features. pathologies may be unrecognized during routine examinations. Current diagnostic techniques are constrained unrevealing in presurgical patients. This prospective study aimed to evaluate transnasal palatal transillumination technique diagnosis of SMCP at our institute hospital, period from 2005-2020. Patients methods Twenty-one cases were recruited age range 2-60 months. Transnasal controllable light intensity endoscope used photo video recorded. Results In this study, 21 (13 males 8 females) detected or confirmed by intranasal transillumination. Frequency patients was 3.39%. All presented symptomatic complaints time, apart 5 (23.8%) diagnosed lip repair operations. Presenting symptoms hypernasality (23.8%), delayed speech perforated nasal escape milk food (14.3%), feeding difficulties otitis media (4.8%). During intra-oral examination, all had bifid uvula accompanied SMCP. appeared as thin central lucency.
